PURR vs. CORD in Mount Vernon

PURR took to battle at 2:15pm on Sunday rolling against the Central Ohio Roller Dolls. The floor was slick and both teams' jammers fought hard to hold tight and race around and through the pack. The PURR girls rolled out chasing down the points, while CORD battled hard to keep PURR's jammers from getting the lead jammer position.

Intermission seemed to come and go fast for the PURR girls who were ready to pick up the pace in the second half. PURR worked hard pushing their jammers through the pack and picking up the teamwork to trap the CORD jammer in the litterbox. PURR wasn't going to give up the points without a cat-fight! The score was close through the whole second half, with CORD in the lead and PURR clawing their way up to bridge the gap.
It was a hard fight with only 10 girls on the PURR team, but Inked Assassin put in her work while breaking the 100 point barrier.
With only minutes left, the battle was intense with lots of cheering and jumping from the crowd (and the teammates!) as the two jammers each took their  turns in the penalty box. As the clock ticked down, the final score was CORD 179: PURR 170. A close game, and a great day for spectators of the sport. No lack of excitement on this day!!

Many congratulations to the MVPs for this game!! PURR MVP blocker went to Sophonda Drama, and PURR MVP jammer went to Inked Assassin. Way to go ladies!

    The souls of my enemies
  • Which celebrity would you like block into the wall?
There are so many…The singer from FUN

  • Do you have any pets? Do they skate too?
2 Pugs and a cat.  They only do artistic skating these days.  The cat moonlights as a derby ref from time to time.
  • What did you think of the movie Whip It?
It’s a great movie.  I love it and any derby girl that claims they don't is just trying to front. Don’t lie girl, you know it hits the spot.
  • What advice would you give to up and coming derby girls?
Never give up, don’t only shoot for the minimum, play every jam like it’s your last, and make sure you always play for the team on the front of your jersey and not the name on the back.
  • Do you have a nemesis?
HAHAHA, with a name like mine you can rest assured I have more than one.
  • How many hours do you think you spend training for your sport? On AND off of skates?
I skate about 15 hours a week (4 practices, speed practice, open skates, and scrimmages/bouts), I participate in or teach 4 hours a week of zumba, 3 hours per week lifting weights, another hour of aerobics and strength training.  In addition to my current weekly routine I rock climb, dance, and participate in quad skate speed racing.
  • What else do you like to do on skates?
A better question would be What DON’T I do on skates?!
  • Are you a Derby mama? (Do you have kids) What do your kids think about derby? When they cheer for you, do they use your real name, your derby name, or something else?
I have a 6 year old daughter who skates, speed skates, and will be joining derby as soon as she is old enough to get in a Jr league.  She comes to all my bouts and cheers me on!  She screams SOPHONDA DRAMA and usually steals a marker and puts 411 on her arm.
  • Have you ever run into a referee? (or vice versa?)
Both, I totally got tea bagged by one once in a bout
  • Do you have any pre-bout rituals that you do? (Like smelling your helmet?)
I slaughter and drink the blood of a unicorn
  • Do you agree with the following movie quote (and why or why not): “Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory… lasts forever.”
Pretty much my motto.  I would skate on broken legs to win a game and own the glory.
