SO YOU WANNA BE A PURR GIRL?

So you wanna be a PURR Girl?

So this is it. You decided. You wanna be a PURR girl. You want the glory. You want the excitement. You want the muscles. You wanna knock people over. You wanna SCORE. YOU WANNA BE A POWERHOUSE ON EIGHT WHEELS.

...You don't know where to start.

Well here is a run down of how to start your dream life in the derby world. Everyone has to start somewhere, but the first step is having the DRIVE. If you didn't have the will, desire, and drive to want it... then you probably stopped reading after the first paragraph.

For those who WANT IT, here are the basic things you can do to start your life as a PURR derby girl, with some resources to help you be all you PURR-fectly can be.

LEARN IT

Roller Derby isn't just about who can be the roughest. There are no points for tackling, and the team doesn't win because they knocked over the most girls. Derby has rules, guidelines, penalties, referees, skills, and playbooks. YES, there is strategy to this chaos. You might not see it at first, but to be awesome in derby, you have to know what you CAN do, what you CAN'T do, and what gets your team the most points. Because THAT is what derby is about. THE TEAM. It's not about you, and it's not about your jammer. It's about how the team works together to make the points happen.

So how do you learn the rules? You read the rule book (link this). And then... you find someone who can explain it to you. :-) For now, the basic principles of the game are:
  1. Get your jammer (star helmet) to pass opposing players on the track as many times as possible. This is where you get points.
  2. Keep the other jammer from passing you or anyone at all.
  3. Maintain a pack. (this is harder than you think.)
  4. Do this while legally blocking, checking, pushing, moving your rump until the black and white striped doodle-chump-punk points a finger like a stump and tells you STEP OFF...
  5. Rinse. REPEAT.
To really get to know what is legal to do, and what isn't, the best way to learn is to repeatedly watch derby or play a game that teaches you derby rules. Here are some links that help you get accustomed to the most common penalties and rules.

WORK IT

You may notice that we are all on skates. Don't think for one second that you will ever be simply rolling around the derby track. I can't remember one time when I was ONLY rolling. THIS IS A WORKOUT. You will be doing anything BUT coasting during a derby bout. And because of that, you need to have the strength and endurance to make it through without wanting to collapse on the floor in a puddle of sweat. So prepare for it. Even if you can't get to the rink, or you haven't been accepted to the team yet, there are a lot of things you can do to get your body ready. Here are a few links with some ideas of things you can do off your skates. Also, keep reading our blog! We will post more workout tips for derby girls soon!

DO IT AGAIN

You put on your skates. You read the rule book. You walk the walk. You talk the talk. You block the block. You wear the stockings. You can pass all the minimum skills on the test. (Yes, there's a test.) That's great. Now go DO IT AGAIN.

This is a sport, and just like any other sport, practice makes perfect. Use it or lose it. That includes mental skills too. Keep playing with the rule apps. Watch other teams. Google videos. Get ideas. Always be thinking about scenarios that you might be in. And even if you aren't the jammer, it doesn't mean you shouldn't learn how to jam. You may end up giving great advice to your jammer and be a valuable resource. Some of the greatest contributors to our team don't even skate in the bouts. They are the ones who are constantly looking for more information and passing it on to the rest of us. WE ARE A TEAM. So remember, if you don't practice, then you will eventually become a weak link, and that's bad for the team.

Here's some more links to help you practice...

WANT IT MORE

Get pumped up. Get excited. Don't let nerves get the best of you. The best derby girls have their bad days and their bad plays. It happens. Expect that you will screw up, but get excited about it. Remember that it is the thrill of BEING THERE. DOING IT. Go out there and GET IT. WANT IT. And when you get tired, or feel like you are on your knee pads more than your skates, play the Rocky theme song in your head and take off after that bi... chic... and show her you aren't going to let her get away that easy. Stick that booty in front of everyone you can find and shout from the roof tops "BABY GOT BACK!".

DERBY DANCING, June 9, 2013

WE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES

It was a beautiful morning... the sun was shining, the birds were singing, the rink was open... it was a great day for some Derby Dancing.

Great lighting? Check.
Awesome music? Check.
Hot dance instructor? Check.
Awesome Finale? Check.
Sexy people dancing everywhere? Check.
Put baby in the corner? Nope, baby was at home that morning with Wicked Hips.

Yes, ladies and gentleman, that morning Wicked Hips wasn't able to make it to our Derby Dancing class because she was at home giving birth to the new and upcoming derby girl on the team. Just give her another 18 years and we'll transform her from 8lbs of cuteness into a self-confident, outgoing, strong-as-an-ox Derby Queen.

In the meantime, however, we worked at trying to help transform our fans with some spectacular cardio dancing led by Sophonda Drama. The music was fun and fast, just like the derby demo that followed it. We had an assortment of Derby skaters from around the region who came out and jammed with us during the cardio Derby Dancing workout, and then jammed with us on the derby track afterwards. Everyone got a great workout that day! (Except for maybe our coach, Notorious J.O.E., who sat on the bench moving his jaw more than his feet during the dancing. Probably because it didn't involve skates. He wouldn't know a new idea if it hit him in the 'Pachenga'. HA!)

[Picture of Sophonda Drama preparing for the Derby Dancing class]

We want to give a shout out to all the people who came out to support us and who participated in the Chinese auction and raffle. It was great to see so many people there cheering us on and giving us 'five' as we sped around the derby track! And we can tell that you all loved the prizes that you won! (Especially these two!)

As Johnny Castle said..."Sorry for the interruption, folks, but I always do the last dance of the season. This year somebody told me not to. So I'm gonna do my kind of dancin' with a great partner, who's not only a terrific dancer, but somebody... who's taught me... that there are people willing to stand up for other people no matter what it costs them. Somebody who's taught me about the kind of person I wanna be."

Look for pics of that morning coming soon on our PURR Facebook page!

PURR vs First Settlement Derby Dames

THE PENNSYLVANIA UNDERGROUND ROLLER REBELLION KEEPS ON ROLLIN!!!

Saturday June 8th, PURR travelled to Marietta, Ohio where they met up with the First Settlement Derby Dames at the Washington County Fairgrounds. It was a packed house for the "Jammin for the Cure" bout! Our best wishes go out to the Leimkuehler family!
The game rolled out at 5:00pm with both teams going strong. The First Settlement Derby Dames were pushing their jammers through the pack to get the lead jammer position while PURR tried to dig their claws in and make up points. It took a while for PURR to get their paws wet at the Washington County Fairgrounds and get in a rhythm.

At intermission they were down in points, but after a big rally during the intermission, and a quick reminder of how purr-fectly they work together during practice, they came back with a vengeance! During the second half, PURR's jammers came out on top and took the lead jammer position time after time, racking up points to take the lead.  At ten minutes to go, the team put their all into it and worked to hold off the Derby Dames.

It was looking like they were going take the bout, but with less than two minutes to go, two bad kitties got sent to the penalty box and the Derby Dames saw their chance.

They fought hard in the last jam and took the lead for a close win at 218 to 198.It was a good fight for both teams and a tense game with lots of excitement. Who could ask for more?

Who? Maybe the guys... cause they wanted a piece of the action too! So PURR took on the guys in the Co-ed bout and MAN was that a blast! PURR took the co-ed win at 176 to 120. You would have had to be there to really appreciate it. ;-)  (hint hint)

As always, the PURR team had their faithful fans representing them no matter where they traveled. <3

At the end of the night, two PURR team members took home the MVP jammer and MVP blocker awards. Congratulations Inked Assassin and Pi Snatcher!!
