PURR INTERVIEWS: Wicked Hips #93A

DERBY NAME: Wicked Hips

DERBY NUMBER: 93a

Your Age: 29, 30 in December

What you skate on: Reidell 911s with a Powertrack plate, Bont Vaypors with a Pilot plate. Wheels vary by the floor. I also skate on inlines Bont custom molded 2 point Vaypors.

Why that name?
It's a play on 'Wicked Lips' the wheels. But I'm also teased for my bony hips.

Why that number?
That's the durometer of my first set of speed wheels. I tend toward softer wheels.

Which part of your gear is your favorite/least favorite?
The mouthguard. It reminds me of having braces and a retainer. Yuck!

How long have you been skating/playing derby?
I have been playing for about 6 months. I came to a few practices and then found out I was pregnant. I spent a lot of time watching bouts and practices and came back with a lot more knowledge about the game.

How did you discover roller derby?

I got roped into it by my friend from speed skating, derby name Sophonda Drama. The deal was she would try my inline skates and I would try a derby practice. A year later I'm on the team and she has never worn inlines again. LOL

What is another person’s derby name that you think is awesome?

Dorian Slay. I love the book Picture of Dorian Gray. I would have loved to have that name.

What is your weirdest talent? (Derby doesn’t count. It’s not weird.)

I taught myself to unicycle. I don't get a chance to do it often, but once I rode it all the way to A&W Rootbeer from my house (over 3 miles) without falling off. Then I got a rootbeer float, rested my haunches, and rode back home.

What was your favorite Christmas or Birthday present received as a kid?

I got my first pair of rollerskates for my third birthday. I can still remember it. They were the Playskool kind that go over your shoes and make that loud clacking noise. They came wrapped in a paper grocery bag and I chose pumpkin pie instead of a birthday cake. My mom tells me that I got a smurf phone as well. Obviously the skates had more of a lasting effect.

What is something that most people don’t know, or would never guess about you?
I've traveled to India & Nepal, rode on an elephant, flown over Mount Everest, run a marathon in Greece finishing in the Olympic Stadium, climbed the Eiffel Tower and run around the leaning tower of Pisa, skated the mountains of Bavaria, hiked a mountain in Costa Rica while pregnant, and run a half marathon also while pregnant.

What non-skate related item would I find in the bottom of your skate bag right now?
A more appropriate question might be what skate related items might you find in my purse right now...

What is ONE thing that you ALWAYS do right after taking off your skates?
I regret that I do not wash my eZeefits more often.

What is your favorite part of your team’s practice?
I like the painful exercises we do. The team tries to skip them when our coach misses practice, but I don't let them.  Everyone hates me a little when I do that :D

Do you think your significant other would be able to make it through a jam?
My husband eats LOTS of jam.

What current or retired Derby chick do you most admire?

A couple of my favorites are Sophia Scorin' and Little Gnat from the NEO Junior Roller Derby team. At their ages and with their skill levels, they are going to tear up the track when they are old enough to be on adult teams. I'm a huge fan of junior derby!
